Raupuha Shorthorn

hardy, quiet cattle that milk and grow

The Shorthorn is one of New Zealand’s oldest beef breeds. They’re known for a quiet temperament, strong maternal ability and plenty of milk. Coat colours range through red, white and roan. In a crossbreeding programme with Angus or Hereford, Shorthorn bulls add hybrid vigour, fertility and calf growth.

Our breeding philosophy

  • Built for the hill. Our cows calve and rear on steep country, so our bulls come from cattle that earn their keep.

  • Balanced figures and good type. We use proven Australian AI sires alongside our own bulls and select for balanced EBVs, not single trait extremes.

  • Milk and maternal strength. Raupuha females are selected to calve easily and wean heavy calves.

  • Proven by data. All progeny are DNA tested, weighed and muscle scanned. We’re part of NZ Beef Shorthorn’s progeny programme with Beef + Lamb Genetics. The steers for this programme are currently being hosted on farm.

Our annual on-farm 2 year old bull sale is held on the last Tuesday in May.

20 Bulls sold by auction

Our Shorthorn herd was established in the 1970s. Today we run about 85 registered cows, bred to handle King Country hill country and turn out bulls that improve commercial herds.
