Raupuha Suffolk

terminal sires that put weight on lambs

The Suffolk is one of the world’s best known terminal sire breeds, easily spotted by its black face and legs. Suffolk-sired lambs are vigorous at birth, grow fast and finish with good muscling. That makes them a reliable choice over Perendale, Romney or composite ewes when every lamb is going to the works.

Our breeding philosophy

  • Growth and yield together. We select on NZ Terminal Worth (NZTW), balancing lamb growth (TSG) with meat yield (TSM).

  • Hill country fit. Our Suffolks are raised on the same country as our maternal flocks, so they’re active, sound and work well over large mobs.

  • Proven at the top. Our Suffolks rank in the top percentiles of the NZTW index.

  • Farmed tough. Autumn humidity makes sheep farming tough here, and we are one of the most northern Suffolk flocks.

  • IMF. Measuring and selecting for IMF for eating quality, to suit the end consumer.

  • Data focus. We collect as much data as possible - if it can be measured, we record it.

  • Sound and healthy. All rams are tested clear of brucellosis each year and leave the farm with a quarantine drench and up to date vaccinations.

  • Worm resistance. We are beginning work in this area and are currently doing the WormFEC CarLa mouth swab / saliva testing.

80 rams sold annually (30 by auction)

Our Suffolk rams sire fast growing, high yielding lambs that reach the works early. Our foundation ewes were purchased in 1999, and the flock runs alongside our maternal flocks on the same hill country.
